Revere House opens.

May 1, 1847

Architect: William Washburn. Designed in the Greek Revival style, it is an enlargement of Bulfinch’s 1797 Kirk Boott house and located in Bowdoin Square near today’s 100 Cambridge Street. Guests include Presidents Polk, Fillmore, Pierce, Johnson and Grant, the Prince of Wales, and Jenny Lind. Mayor Benjamin Seaver is a longtime occupant. The building burns down on January 15, 1912, and is rebuilt. The hotel closes in 1919, and is torn down to make way for a fire station in 1920. A state office building is built on the site in 1966.*
